19. Annie Boyden Varnot

I came across Annie Boyden Varnot, who does some sick work with a couple different mediums. The first are these stunning abstract sculptors. It’s crazy how she creates movement and depth with straws. Using the straws, one can see texture, that the piece is no smooth. Varnot pieces remind me of a coral reef, intense colors and organic shapes. The ligth that she places inside the peice really adds to the organic representation, the colors start to merge, creating different shapes.

Next are her paper cutouts. She is very skilled and detailed with these cut outs. Some of the ones were abstract, however they were interesting to explore. Many of her woodcuts were images of trees, with every branch, and leaf being carefully revealed. I've done a few cut outs in my days, and it was no walk in the park.

The last of her works that I admire is a site- specific installation at Smack Mellon, DUMBO, Brooklyn, NY.  She has taken envelopes, which are hands-sewn onto fishing line and suspended them from the floor to ceiling to create a cylinder. Even though she used fishing line, she didn’t line all the envelopes, she let them loosely hang in different possessions, which ascetically looks nice.

Annie Boyden Varnot was born in Barre Massachusetts and is currently residing and working in Brooklyn, New York.
