22. Kara Walker

Kara Walker was born in Stockton, California and moved to Georgia after her father was relocated for work. Walker attended Atlanta College and received a BFA in 1991 and her MFA for the Rhode Island School of Design in 1994 . She is best known for her large silhouettes, the content of her works revolve around themes of power, race, sexuality and her heritage.

After going to her page and reading the concepts of her art, I can understand why she is seen as a controversial artist, in the work she does. Many of her works are revolved around race. Walker will exaggerate, facial features, body shapes and costumes to represent a specific ethnicity. Which after veiwing some of her works, I can't always tell what ethnicity it is, but I can always tell if it is a black person or not.

-Kara Walker’s work is layered with images that reference history, literature, culture, and the darker aspects of human behavior. Connecting all of her work is an examination of power. The characters in her environments display power struggles of all kinds: physical, emotional, personal, racial, sexual, and historical.-

Walker is bold and very daring, but I love it!!
