13. John Robertson

I came across John Robertson art work when I took my first printmaking class a few years ago. I used the photo above to make my 1st ever woodcut. Even though I'll never be able to dunk this painting is really powerful. Reminds me of the peek or the highlights of an important game.

Robertson earned a BA degree in English Literature from California State University, North-ridge. Unlike many of the artist I have discussed, Robertson, for over 23 years was a senior executive with a large retail cooperation. He left his suit and ties behind in 1991 and dedicated himself to pursue art full time; which I'm glad he did, his work is amazing.

My favorite works of Robertson's are the ones where he takes the objects that you use to play the sport with (basketball, football, golf ball etc...), instead of the focus being on the person. For the basketball paintings one still gets the feel of an action shot, just a zoomed in view. I also like the fact that he uses every color in all aspects of his works, it seems messy, but unified if that makes sense.
