'Geg's' 2008 This is a woodcut print from 2008-9 |
Luke Dixon is a British based artist, who works from the North East of England. He graduated from Northumbria University studying Fine Arts. Dixon captures everyday life, expression, gestures and emotions of individuals in his works. He has developed a unique style that in tales graphic and illustration concepts.
Dixon uses line and patterns to replace highlights and shadows within his works. In some of his pieces this technique adds almost a mechanical feel. In She's Still Got It, a piece Dixon created in an ink drawing, displays his style. He places circles and lines on the joints, almost like it’s not human. The lines make up the shadows on the face and shirts. The figure who is an old Chinese man is throwing up gang signs, which I thought was pretty funny. One thing I also noticed in many of his pieces I reviewed, he did not have eyes, it was just a white space. Even though the man is squinting, you can tell his eyes are not filled. In Dixons colored works the lines and patterns come to life and better display his style.
Dixons works make you want to look at every aspect of the design, what patterns on the shirt, are the eyes going to be filled, what expression are the figures going to display. I like the fact that he uses older individuals to display silly and playful actions, instead of making them grumpy and unhappy looking.
