King has created a series of Haitian earthquake survivor woodcuts, which are executed very well. King collaborated with photojournalist Q. Sakamaki, using his photographs of the Haitian victims. The collaboration was going to benefit the Haitian people support project. The photos taken by Sakamaki were taken at Pont-Rouge refugee camp, after the earthquake disaster in 2010.
King use of marks, and direction, really helps emphasis the old age and young age of the victims. The movement in the background was a good choice, I’m glad he didn’t leave it plain. The details on the shirt, shows that theirs a pattern. Even though the scarf lines are going in the same direction as the background, you’re able to differentiate the two. The facial features are very distinct. One can see the cheek bones, and the shape of the nose, and the lady is squinting by leaving no white in her eyes.
